GROUP SHORR IMAGERY TEST (GSIT)
JOSEPH E. SHORR, Ph.D.
© 1977

DESCRIPTION:

A group administered projective test of adult personality developed by Dr. Joseph E. Shorr and his associates at the Institute for Psycho Imagination Therapy in Los Angeles, the GSIT consists of fifteen (15) items in which the testee is asked to imagine a particular situation and then to expand in a directed way upon the image evoked. Imagery is used as a vehicle to bypass the conscious censor and to reveal the individual's self image, areas of conflict, and strategies for coping with the world. The imaginary situation provides a window into the world as it is seen by the testee. It is revelatory for both tester and tested.

USE:

The GSIT uses imaginary situations as the modality for revealing a wide range of' personality variables including: the individual's personal world, relationships between sell' and others, self-image, sexual attitudes, and internal and external forces acting upon the person. The test is administered verbally with the aid of' a tape recording to the testees, who respond in writing to each imaginary situation on the record blank. It seeks out the phenomenological world of the person being tested, therefore the intelligence level does not limit its use. It is minimally Culture bound and thus is not restricted to any particular national, social, economic, or cultural stratum.

THEORY:

Previous work by Dr. Shorr has shown the importance of visual imagery as all indicator of the personality conflicts, strategies of defense and other ranges of personality functions. The rationale for these beliefs concerning personality conflict is much more extensively stated in Dr. Shorr's books (1972, 1974).

SCORING AND INTERPRETATION:

The test call be scored reliably for degree of conflict in the personality after studying the sample responses given ill the Manual. Instructions are given for determining a quantitative score for the test. The most interesting and powerful application of the test is for in-depth personality analysis. A sample of the theoretical basis for such an analysis is given in the monograph included with the set. It contains a near verbatim blind analysis by the Institute staff of one SIT record.

We must point out, however, that formal validation studies needed to support interpretations suggested in the Manual cannot be presented at this time. The interpretations suggested are based on Dr. Shorr's clinical experience with the use of these images as therapeutic tools.

NORMS:

Normative data, based on a sample Population of one hundred four (104) state university students, are included in the Manual. *

RESEARCH:

Interscorer reliability ranged from .51 to .88, significant at the .05 level. There was no significant difference between the means of the four scorers at the .05 level. Three of the four persons doing the study had no prior training ill Psycho-Imagination theory. They used the guidelines in the manual for scoring.

Test-retest reliability of the GSIT was .56, significant at the .01 level. There was no significant difference between the means and standard deviations obtained oil either presentation of the GSIT and the means and standard deviations presented in the manual, at the .01 level of confidence.

Concurrent validity with the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale (MAS) was significant, r = .23 (p = .05) for the first administration, and r = .33 (p = .0 1) for the second administration.

Work in progress includes enlargement of the normative samples and a study to determine if the instrument can be used reliably in place of the SIT.

PURCHASERS: The test is restricted for use by competent clinicians. Purchasers should provide evidence of qualification with their order.
